Stephen Whitehurst, 49, of Brighton Bier (Image: Martin Burton/SussexLive) At the shop Stephen Whitehurst said he saw the expansion to the site as an opportunity to engage with customers in a different way than over a bar. On the other side of the i360 Brighton Bier has recently opened a new retail site to expand on its brewery close to the Marina and its pubs in town. “It’s a lovely space and it’s nice when there are local things going on to bring people in.” Bethan did however continue that the area has the potential to and should in future also host more seasonal events like Christmas markets. It’s very weather dependent down here but hopefully it’s not like this for too long.” Bethan also spoke about how the area can be good for tourism thanks to the seafront location, the i360, and the Upside-down House. She then added: “It’s hit and miss completely. “It’s definitely getting better,” she said. Next door at Cad-eau stationery and gift shop 25-year-old Bethan Gorvett said things are still picking up when compared to last summer when Covid restrictions were in place. Fred said he has also found a niche of well-selling ice creams for dogs that are popular with customers visiting the beach.īethan Gorvett, 25, outside Cad-eau on Brighton seafront (Image: Martin Burton/SussexLive) Instead Archies will focus on selling treats and items like collars or that will need replacing like poo bags. He also said that despite being open for just eight weeks he has already decided to change the concept of the store because the ‘location is not good for selling large bags of food’. But the weather, yes definitely.”įred added that he has set up an online site for his shop which ‘balances out the footfall’ and helps in periods of bad weather. “With tourists, we have lots of Londoners so I’m not very worried. “I don’t count the number of people, just the money in the till,” he said. This is because as Fred revealed he chose the location and was prepared for quiet days - though he said low customer levels can still be a concern. However, despite speaking on a drab and drizzly June day Fred and all of his neighbours who were open said their thoughts towards their businesses are positive and optimism is high for better weather. “I’ve been here for 18 years walking my dog and we’re usually the only ones when it’s really pouring it down.” The 46-year-old is one of many business owners running a small shop in the arches on Brighton beach, each one faced with seasonal and weather-related customer footfall. ![]() READ MORE: Life for Brighton businesses as some thriving and others struggling amid cost of living crisis We’re going to turn eight weeks old on Friday (June 10). “I kind of knew when the weather is not nice the seafront can be dead,” the owner of Archies pet shop on Brighton beach Fred said. And that can be bad news for businesses in traditionally tourist areas. However, couple the underwhelming and wet start to the summer, cost of living worries, and the fact that people can travel abroad again and a bustling seafront has become a somewhat unfamiliar sight this year. The picture-postcard arches and views of Palace Pier and West Pier make for an ideal location to draw in tourists and city residents. The fries are fresh and they were great too. The cheeseburger was made with really good meat and it tasted great, even though it came with “everything” on it and that’s not what I meant when I asked for “everything.” I was referring to having mustard, ketchup, tomato, pickles, etc on it. The food was really tasty though! The hot dogs were hot and fresh on a nicely warmed bun. to look at the menu on the wall and explaining what “everything” on a hot dog really was (It’s not “everything” as the word suggests, it’s simply chili and onions). The waitress was borderline rude in explaining to me. ![]() Having never been here before, I wasn’t familiar with the ordering process, nor the menu that was hanging on a wall. I stopped in for lunch on a weekday while traveling from Pittsburgh to Grove City.
